Women, Textiles & the Making of Haarlem
A walking tour with Women of Haarlem
Who really made Haarlem’s famous linen? Join us for a 90-minute walk through the old city centre and discover the women behind one of Haarlem’s most important industries. From household weaving and the silk trade to the bleaching fields that made Haarlem linen famous across Europe, women were there at every step, even when the records forget to mention them. The walk follows the thread through to the present, from the School of Arts & Crafts, where weaving was taught to a new generation, to the Linen Project, which is bringing flax and local textile production back to Haarlem.
About Women of Haarlem
Women have never been absent from history, only from the stories we tell. Women of Haarlem makes their presence visible through walks, talks and workshops, showing women shaping the city as artists, entrepreneurs, patrons, workers and educators. Not as exceptions, but as part of the fabric all along.
